he has faced some difficulties along the way in Lavasa, and the original plan to ship out some proper rowing equipment before this year’s rainy season has fallen through; eventually he hopes that a fully functioning club will be established. It is clear that developments like this have the potential to spread the reach of rowing beyond its traditional bas- es, although the delays that the project has faced perhaps point to the difficulties. Running through all of Red-


grave’s post-retirement projects is the common thread of using sport to change people’s lives. “Sport is a huge motivator for good,” he says. His desire to continue to give back to a new generation stems not only from his mother’s “com- munity-minded” world view, but also from his status as an athlete adored by the public: “You see yourself as being very privileged to have been able to do what I did.” There can be little doubt that Redgrave will still loom large in the consciousness of rowers and public alike for a long time to come as he continues to put his considerable muscle behind the legacy of his own sporting suc- cess in Britain and beyond.
