HHEADEREADER PROFILES FUNDED BOATS

LW2x Michelle Sechser Californian 28-year-old Michelle Sechser pulled off a double coup this year, winning the LW1x and LW2x trials and thus giving herself a choice of crew. Unsurprisingly she chose the Olympic-class, funded LW2x, and is

hoping to make the medal rostrum this year after LW4x fourth place in 2012 and LW1x seventh place in 2013. She works in the benefits department of the Chesapeake Energy Corporation, is particularly proud of having broken 7 minutes for her 2km erg, and loves country music.

W2- Megan Kalmoe One of the most senior members of the US women’s team, Kalmoe will celebrate her 31st birthday just before this year’s World Championship regatta. In a good omen, that will be held in Amsterdam, the site of Kalmoe’s first international title, since she won under-23 gold there in the women’s four in 2005. Another Huskies graduate, Kalmoe reached the senior team in 2008, finishing fifth in the W2x at the Beijing Olympics, and capping that with W4x silver at the 2011 Worlds and W4x bronze at the London Olympics. She was fifth in the new USA W4x last year, and with her results, would have the option to sweep or scull this year. Kalmoe is most famous for having since 2008 run The List, a blog- based ranking of the “20 Hottest Male Rowing Athletes of the Year”, which she compiles at the final event of the season.

LW2x Devery Karz 26-year-old Karz from Utah has an amazing opportunity to make the senior team this year, after winning under-23 silver in the LW4x in 2009, and finishing fifth in the same event the fol- lowing season. She started row- ing at Oregon State University in 2007 and has been studying communications with minors in Spanish and Chinese.

W2- Kerry Simmonds After gold at the U23 level in 2010, and a successful college rowing career in the University of Washington Huskies varsi- ty, Simmonds leapt into the post-Olym- pic squad and straight into the new women’s eight which set a world best time and won the 2013 world title. She has a degree in biology, trains at the Princeton training centre, enjoys editing home videos, and started rowing at university as a walk-on to keep fit. Sim- monds is 25 and is aiming to compete for the USA at the Rio Olympics.
