Water Under The Boat
FISA and WWF have joined forces to promote cleaner environments for all

ver the last three years a very special partnership has been developing in the world of rowing, and one that looks set to flourish for
many years to come. But this isn’t a partnership based on the attributes so often demonstrated by, say, a coxless pair on their way to the podium. It is not a partnership about brawn or technique or timing. This is a partnership that finds its strength in the shared belief that rowing has the power to make the world we live in a better place. To trace the origins of this partnership we have to go back to early 2011. Rowing’s international governing body, FISA (Federation Internationale des Societies d’Aviron), was in the process of assessing its overall strategy and defining the core values that make the sport so special. Along with Team Work, Education, Focus, and Tradition, the fifth core value that FISA settled on as crucial was Nature. The close connection that rowing enjoys with the environment is a key part of the sport, and one which many people outside, and even inside, of rowing often underappreciate. The value of clean water and its environment to rowers is huge and so is the importance of keeping it in as sustainable a condition as possible.
Furthermore, the quality and quantity
of available water worldwide is one of the biggest global environmental issues today. There are currently 1.1 billion people who have no access to clean drinking water, so any body of water, be it used by agricultural businesses, industrial companies, or rowers, is in high demand. Clean water is crucial to the success of the sport,
but it is also crucial to the survival of billions of people worldwide. These twin concerns were at the heart of the partnership that FISA were looking to establish. FISA were keen to find an organization that could help them set new best practices in sustainable sports event management, while ensuring that their messages and policies were both correct and credible.
