MAKING A SPLASH
Since the last edition was published, I’ve attended the ITM conference in Wales and the GTMC conference in Marrakech (p16) – as well taking a fascinating trip to Ethiopia (p60). But one thing that sticks in my mind is getting
to play with the formidable fire engines at Gatwick airport, with Star Wars-like cockpits and ballistic water cannons firing hundreds of feet across the runway – the fire crew pausing only to prevent passing planes getting drenched. Good fun, but the day had a serious purpose: Gatwick CEO Stewart Wingate made a convincing case to travel buyers for runway expansion at the airport – and we’ve grilled Gatwick CCO Guy Stephenson on the topic on p24. However, at the GTMC conference, Heathrow also made a compelling case for a third runway. Meanwhile, Easyjet CEO Carolyn McCall has yet to be convinced by either side (p9). It’s a complex issue, with a wide spectrum of interests and opinions. But it’s one that affects all of us, so BBT will continue to monitor it closely. Amazingly, it’s already time to start thinking about next year – the Business Travel Awards 2015 are now open for entries (see p36) – so head to
