The girlwith the goldengun
Over the years a number of trends have been seen in the spray tanning sector. Thankfully, when it comes to professionally applied tans, the days of overly- orange bodies with a distinct aroma are, in the main, gone.
“The ingredients now used in tanning products have moved on a long way,” explains Kerri Roberts of Crazy Angel. “The ‘orange’ colour associated with tanning is no longer a fear and natural ingredients are being used deliver the promise of golden results.”
The aim for today’s brands is to enable therapists to deliver the most natural- looking tan possible, which moisturises skin to deliver an even wear.
“Modern products have also diminished the ‘biscuit’ smell associated with tanning; the Crazy Angel products boast a light, floral fragrance that any girl would be happy to smell of,” Kerri adds.
2014 trends
So what’s big for 2014? “The overriding tanning trend for this season is not about matching your own skin colour to what you see on the catwalks; instead it’s more about enhancing your own natural colour,” say whitetobrown. So choosing a brand that enables you to tailor your treatments through a full range of tan shades would be a good idea.
Super-fast treatments are also high on clients’ agendas. “The move towards faster treatments means that tanning can now be a last minute decision,” says Kerri. “Not only that, but salons tend to struggle for appointments on Thursday and Friday evenings in preparation for the weekend so (the faster developing solutions) allow you to book tanning treatments in on Saturday morning.”

Contouring of the face is becoming a big request too, according to Kerri, who adds: “This can be achieved by spraying down the sides of the face to create the allusion of a more chiselled face; it is almost like contouring with tan.”
Also popular this year is the rise of skin- caring formulations, maximising on the benefits of natural ingredients such as antioxidant Pomegranate, and advanced skin care ingredients usually found in facial products. The natural, and in some cases organic, aspects of solutions will also be popular, and clients become increasingly more aware of what they are exposing their skin to.
Choosing your equipment
You also need to opt for a range that offers you a selection of suitable equipment. “It has to be fully functional in all areas of the job, durable, portable and effective,” explains Sandra McClumpha, global Fake Bake consultant.
“Choosing the right spray tanning gun is essential to achieve the perfect sun kissed glow,” adds Emma Cotter, Trainer at Hennessy Hair and Beauty.
“Be aware of the size of the needle on the gun, roughly a 0.6mm needle would be ideal for spray tanning. The smaller the needle the more definition you can achieve with your gun.”
She continues: “Also the volume of spray coming out of the gun is highly important, be careful not to set the setting too high so the solution doesn’t ‘spit’ out of the gun. Always test the volume of spray coming out on a piece of couch roll before you spray directly onto a client. The setting may have been changed since you last used it and you could be in for a nasty surprise if you spray directly onto a client.”
Education and good training prior to offering your services to paying clients is also important. Choose a brand that can
offer you good quality initial training followed by support and further education, or even specific course, for the future. “Practice makes perfect for a good spray tan technique and our training courses demonstrate the skills to achieve a flawless finish, as well as tips and techniques to give your treatments the edge,” explains Lisa Gerrard of Gerrard International, who produce the Kissed By Mii range.
Also, look for a range that can offer you products that complement your solution, such as exfoliators, body buffers, moisturisers and body butters created specifically to work with sunless tans; these will also help add to your business’ bottom line as they are easily retailed.
