PENNSYLVANIA’S OFF THE MARKET
Sands Bethlehem Casino is now off the market as Las Vegas Sands reconsiders its casino operations in Pennsylvania Pennsylvania - Operations
Las Vegas Sands has now taken its Sands Bethlehem casino in Pennsylvania off the market, after several months of rumours that Carl Icahn’s Tropicana Entertainment wanted to buy the venue.
The Pennsylvania property reported GGR of US$117m in the first quarter of 2014. Sands’ owner Sheldon Adelson said: “We are certainly proud of the financial success Sands Bethlehem has achieved, but we are also very proud of fulfilling the commitments we made to the people of the Lehigh Valley. Bringing pride back to a historic site many thought was lost for good is the real legacy of Sands Bethlehem and that is the foundation on which we will continue to build.”
Sands has appointed a new President to oversee this ‘build’ with Mark Juliano stepping in from Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, where he worked as Senior Vice President and Chief Casino Officer.
Mr. Juliano said: “Sands Bethlehem has become one of the leading entertainment and casino desti- nations on the East Coast, and I am very excited to be joining the team. The property has had a tremendous run to this point, but I think there is a real sense of optimism that our best days are still ahead.”
Outgoing Las Vegas Sands President and Chief Operating Officer, Michael Leven, added: “Many of our people have been with us at Sands Bethlehem since the first day the doors opened and they have had to endure some trying events in recent months, including waves of media speculation about the future of the property. Today, that spec- ulation stops, and a new chapter in the history of Sands Bethlehem begins.”
Nevada Deutsche Bank has sold the loss-making Cosmopolitan casino and resort to private equity giant Blackstone for $1.7bn (£1bn) in cash. The Cosmopolitan cost more than US$4bn to build, but has not made a profit since it opened in 2010, losing $100m annually for the last four years. Deutsche took over the property after its developer defaulted on a loan, but Germany's largest bank said it moved to sell the development because it was not central to its business. “The bank is committed to reducing its non-core legacy positions in a capital-efficient manner which benefits shareholders,” Deutsche Bank’s Pius Sprenger.
MGM Resorts starts work on new Las Vegas indoor arena
LAS VEGAS Las Vegas Arena Company, owned by AEG and MGM Resorts International have now broke ground on a world-class, private- ly funded, US$375m indoor arena set to open in spring 2016. Located west of the Las Vegas Strip, between New York-New York and Monte Carlo, the new 20,000-seat arena will host box- ing, UFC and other sporting events, headline entertainment, shows and special events.
“We are committed to ensuring that Las Vegas retains its title as Entertainment Capital of the World for generations to come,” said Mr. Murren. “The addition of this arena, which will attract new
events to the market and enable existing events to grow in scale, is an integral component in that strategy.”
Mr. Beckerman said: “We are excited to be breaking ground on this iconic project. Together with MGM, we have designed an arena with some of the most unique features, offerings and amenities for our fans and sponsors. We look forward to bringing the best sports and entertainment events to this new state-of-the-art arena in one of the most vibrant entertainment markets in the world.”
Expected to host more than 100 events annually, the arena
designed by industry-leading architect Populous, will house multiple locker facilities, premi- um dressing rooms, complete broadcast facilities and a variety of staging innovations that will bring the biggest stars and most important events to Las Vegas’ newest landmark. The arena will feature 50 luxury suites, more than two dozen private lounge boxes and other specially designed exclusive hospitality offerings never before featured in a facility of its kind.
Commission Chair Sisolak added: “This arena should symbolise for everybody watching that Las Vegas will continue to emerge from the recession a stronger, smarter, healthier and more vibrant destination for interna- tional tourism. Projects such as this create much-needed jobs and are true economic drivers.”
