Legislator calls for tightening of controls over the Industry

ARGENTINA Deputy Ricardo Alfonsín has demanded that the government put an end to the “indiscrimi- nate” granting of casino and gaming licences.

The legislator and member of the Radical Civic Union Party said that: "There is no argument that can justify the fact that an activi- ty has been facilitated with so much ease which functions as a trap in which the anguish and despair entrap the poor in order to enrich the rich.

“I hope that the President and

the ruling party, which say they are all so progressive , recognise the need for new regulations when it comes to the establish- ment of casinos , slots , bingo halls and gambling in the coun- try, and their hours of operation," Alfonsín said. The member of the radical party called also for “a new tax legislation to halt and reverse the trend of the prolifera- tion of gaming.”

The National Deputy’s calls for changes to gaming laws come at a time of growing controversy over the industry especially in

Buenos Aires with the Justice department now investigating alleged irregularities in the casi- nos operating in the capital. The prosecutor´s office has received a complaint that there is a lack of online control over three casinos operating in Buenos Aires.

Although casinos are banned by law there are still three large scale casinos in the capital. These are the two “floating casinos” docked permanently to the har- bour while the third is under the racetrack in the neighbourhood of Palermo downtown. All three have been the focus of a bitter dispute between the city govern- ment and the federal government as to who should reap the tax benefits of gaming.
