REVIEWS On the Range

This month SGB's Richard Punyer reviews Nippon Shaſt's N.S. Pro Modus 3 Tour 120

Overview:

The shaft incorporates a highly rigid tip section to reduce spin but a low rigidity mid- section for control. The Low rigidity butt section also promotes a solid feel to the shaft. Designed to promote an easy launch but

with a mid-trajectory at a tour level spin rate. The Tour 120 may work better for golfers with a more aggressive swing with a late release ball strike.

Verdict: The feel is remarkably consistent throughout

the range. Strike is crisp, with great feedback on the purity of the hit travelling up the shaft to the hands. The feeling of consistency of weight is amazing from three to lob wedge, even taking the differing weights of the heads into consideration. Not one club feels a different swing weight to the others, giving proof to Nippon’s claim that their manufacturing tolerance limits are some of the most stringent out there. Off centre hits are signalled with a rather ‘dead’ feeling – nothing like the finger tingling

www.nipponshaſt.com Launch:

Launch is mid to high throughout the set, and is exceptionally consistent. There is very little lateral movement of the ball in flight if right/left or left/right spin is imparted, indicating very little torque at the moment of impact. Instead, a gentle draw or fade is the result, never more than that. Flight is easy to control and even though

launch is mid to high this does not prevent them performing when set up to hit a low shot. The player is rewarded with a low, penetrating flight with no ballooning if set up is correct.

and shattering feeling those of us of a certain age will remember! Interestingly, distance isn’t affected that

much, though how much this is down to the head or the shaft is open to conjecture.

Loading: Loading is a particularly impressive feeling,

made better by the wall profiling Nippon have developed in the mid section of the shaſt. From the beginning of the downswing and

the shiſt in weight, you can feel the load getting progressively more accentuated until the hitting area, when the unloading is very fast and positive, delivering the clubhead with a very strong movement through the hitting zone. Importantly for me, I am able to feel where

the clubhead is at all times which accentuates the feeling of control I have over it.

Summary: These shafts have really made a difference

to my game at a time when my clubhead speed is only going one way. I’ve played the same course for many years so can compare club distances accurately from any point – 2 examples, 3 iron carry 225, 6 iron carry 191 – I couldn’t come near those with the old shafts, and haven’t done for some years. The enjoyment has come back to hitting iron shots from any distance. If you want an instant improvement to your game, these shafts give it.
