• T e component acts as a bracket to mount processing elec- tronics and acts as a heat sink to manage the thermal load from all of the electronics. It also ties the two halves of the housing together, preventing it from “oil-canning” under external pressure loads.


• T e investment casting process provided the ability to com- bine many parts into one and lower part cost and weight.


Hub Casting


Pier Foundry & Pattern Shop Inc. St. Paul, Minnesota


Material: Ductile iron. Process: Green sand. Weight: 90 lbs. Dimensions: 16 in. diameter, 5.5 in. height. Application: Mining.


• T e part replaced a 34-piece weldment to improve ease of manufacturing while holding up to the rigors of continuous mine operation where the hub rotates at 3,600 rpms. T e cast design saved the customer $76,000 in the fi rst year, reducing costs on the component by more than 50%.


• T e project brought 18,000 lbs. of cast iron production to the industry, and the customer has identifi ed two more hubs to convert into castings.
