EPA Sets Cleaner Automotive Emissions Standards Following input from the public,
health groups, auto manufacturers, refi n- ers and states, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has fi nalized its Tier 3 emission standards for cars and gasoline to reduce pollution while enabling automotive effi ciency improve- ments. T ey are a component of fuel effi - ciency standards resulting in lightweight- ing innovation among metalcasters. In an approach that addresses vehicles and fuels as an integrated system, the
standards aim to reduce volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides by 80%, establishing a 70% tighter particulate matter standard and virtually eliminat- ing fuel vapor emissions. T ey reduce vehicle emissions of air pollutants such as benzene by up to 30%. By 2018, EPA estimates the cleaner
fuels and cars program will cut ambi- ent concentrations of ozone and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by about 260,000 tons. T at is about 10% of emis-
