details DESIGN
Lugs for threaded inserts are placed near the parting plane and riser and gate connections, so they are fed liquid metal more success- fully during solidifi cation.
• Complete fi lling of lugs avoids shrinkage or porosity, which in most cases are not desirable, es- pecially if revealed after drill- ing for the fasteners during machining operations.
As-cast cooling fi ns and cross ribs serve multiple purposes.
• Cross ribs in place of thick cross sec- tions provide the required stiff ness at a reduced weight and they help feed liquid metal to isolated hot spots dur- ing solidifi cation.
• As-cast cooling fi ns provide better heat transfer and facilitate directional solidifi cation through heat extraction, which is critical to achieve good mechanical properties.
