amie and I had a lot of time to think about this record because our son Cammy was in the pro- cess as well. We were thinking of a new album for Spring 2013 and then suddenly… ‘oh, I’m pregnant and the baby’s due Spring 2013. We’re not gonna be able to do that; we need to rethink.’ And I think that’s the best thing we could’ve done, rather than forge ahead and push an album out. You know: ‘It’s been two years, we’ve got to get one out.’”

That makes producing an album sound like giving birth.

“I know! Push it out! But taking that time helped us go slowly and carefully and write down what we wanted to do and make that happen. We chose to make an album that still sounded Scot- tish but not stereotypically so. And not work to a formula any more. And to get the material together and say, ‘what’s going to best suit this song and the story it has to tell?’“

“And we wanted to mix and master the album in Nashville because we sat down one night and looked through all our favourite albums and they all came from the same place. We’ve always been aspiring to make an album that sounds that way, to have that sheen the Nashville albums had.”

And it looks as though baby Cameron will get an executive

producer’s credit on the next album too. His arrival changed more than the sound of his parents’ music.

“I feel a really renewed enthusiasm for making music since

recording Echoes. Since having Cammy it’s definitely made me value the time that I have to make music. And I didn’t see that coming. I’m obviously totally focussed on being a mum but I didn’t expect this new burst of enthusiasm. And I’ve got all these new ideas that I did- n’t have before. So now I need some time to do lots of thinking and talking, which we do on long walks. Lots of walking ahead.”
