23 f 12 shots from the fRoots Rocket Launcher a dozen leading questions to fire at Mor Karbasi

If you were given the funds to organise a concert bill, who would the artists be?

I will give a few from the dead and a few from the living: Michael Jackson – the greatest artist of all times in my view. He had it all with his dancing, singing and songwriting and managed to reach a very high level in all fields (with an exception for his private life perhaps!). Amalia Rodriguez who had the most pure voice and a soul that pours out through her voice. Concha Buika – she is very authentic and true and you can real- ly hear that. Enrique Morente – a marvel. Pepe Marchena – an old fashioned fla- menco singer.

Which totally obscure record do you most treasure and would like more people to know about?

Listening to Um Kulthum at the moment. What was the best live gig you ever saw?

A concert of Michael Jackson I went to see when I was five years old – by far! And what was the worst?

Not sure which was the worst because I always leave shortly after a bad concert starts, never stay long enough to know!

What was your own best ever gig?

It was recently in Paris. Itamar Doari on percussion. I was so happy in that show that almost started to cry in the middle of the show ( I get emotional!)

And what was your worst?

Probably a concert we gave in a small town in France, outdoors.

There was a guy in the audience standing really near the stage, saying things in French and holding up a sign that had something to do with Israel. Some- thing political I guess.

Anyway, I had to think quick how to act because there was no point saying any- thing to him. So I simply ignored him but he kept on standing there and it was funny how at some point people didn’t know who to look at: the singer or the funny guy with the sign shouting things. It was like two shows happening at the same time.

Then someone tore his sign and they were arguing which didn’t help.

What’s the professional achievement you’re most proud of?

A little girl came to me after a concert and said : I really love your songs. She was maybe five.

What’s the most embarrassing thing you ever did in public?

Do you mean after or before the age of three? If before, I can think of many and my mum will kindly show you some of those moments documented in photos should you ever visit her home in Jerusalem…

Which song or piece of music would you most like to have written yourself?

Lacrimosa –Mozart

Who was the first musician or singer you were inspired to emulate?

My mother, Shoshana.

Who was the last-but-one musician or singer you lusted after?

I think I have already explained my fascination with Michael Jackson. Especial- ly as a child.

If you had a rocket launcher, who or what would be the target, and why?

I would shoot down my fears.

Mor Karbasi’s latest album La Tsadika was reviewed in fR369and a track from it was included on last month’s free fRoots 48 compilation.
