12 12 Day of Photonics

A date for your diaries: the 21 October has been designated the Day of Photonics by the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) to raise awareness of photonics. This particular date was chosen, as on this day in 1983 the value of the speed of light was set. The day can be thought of as a precursor to the International Year of Light initiative, which will see various activities taking place throughout 2015 to promote photonics. Carlos Lee gives more details about the day in his column on page 10 and encourages companies to get involved by organising events for the day to promote photonics to the general public. One of the reasons why photonics is so

important is that it encompasses such a broad range of fields. In this issue of Electro Optics, Jessica Rowbury on page 18 looks at how optical modelling is improving the design of LED lighting; on page 14, Tom Eddershaw investigates the uses for terahertz radiation after the University of Leeds in the UK announced producing a record-breaking 1W of terahertz power from a quantum cascade laser; while the article on page 24 looks at high-power ultrafast amplifiers. There’s also a preview of the upcoming SPIE Photonics Europe event on page 30.
