News from EPIC By Carlos Lee, director general, EPIC

Europe benefits from a thriving photonics community A

s I was preparing for the EPIC AGM and the panel discussion on ‘growth and

profitability’, I went through my expectations from the discussion, that it was going to address innovation, IP, pricing, access to capital and other hard-core business topics. I was therefore surprised when in his introductory remarks Nick Martin, CEO of AFE, referred to terms such as belief, emotions, values, courage, and passion. competence to make anything possible already exists in Europe; the key lies in how to get people to work closer together, to share and collaborate more spontaneously. You may have heard this quote: ‘If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an

idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.’ There is a major opportunity coming up for Europe to strengthen relationships and interactions among individuals, both at European, national, and regional level. The Day of Photonics, which will take place on 21 October 2014, offers an excellent occasion for companies to work together to create greater exchange and synergies. It will allow interested parties to organise a local event to promote photonics to the general public. I am sure that the spirit of a photonics community will be reinforced through the joint actions that will be organised across Europe and internationally for the day. The question to you is: how is your

company contributing to a dynamic photonics industry in Europe? It’s up to us to make this work! Gain recognition of being part of the photonics community by becoming a supporter of the Day of Photonics 2014. For more information please contact me directly at carlos.lee@epic-assoc. com.
