back to the 8th century, was among the most important trading centers for the Dutch East India Company during Holland’s “Golden Age” in the 1600s. After nearly a third of the city’s historic center was destroyed during WWII, much has been rebuilt and restored, and many original buildings can be seen on your city tour. Visit the Middelburg Abbey complex, dating from 1125, with its impressive tower, called Lange Jan (“Long John”) by the locals. After lunch, sail to Veere in Zeeland, on what centuries ago was the island of Walcheren, and is now a peninsula with land reclaimed from the sea.
