cpd how many hours online

Charting CPD Vickie Moss, CIPP’s Associate director of marketing and business development, reminds us about CPD A

t every CIPP event I hold 1-2-1 continuing professional development

(CPD) appointments, and the same question comes up in every single one… “How many hours of CPD do I have to log?” The answer to this is simple…however many hours you need. The CIPP’s CPD scheme is different to other schemes. We do not dictate a minimum number of hours or points that you have to complete, which is because everyone is different and everyone has different needs. For example, if you have been in payroll, or pensions, for twenty years and have reached your career objectives in relation to qualifications and position within the organisation, then your learning objective will probably be to keep up to date with legislative and technical changes – and this will not involve as many CPD hours as someone who is new to the industry and having to learn all of the processes. Fundamentally, it is a question of setting yourself objectives for development and then charting your progress towards achieving them. It is about where you want to be and how you plan to get there. Our approach is based on reflection that focuses on outcomes and results, rather than ‘time spent’ or ‘things done’. We are not concerned with how much time you spend on training courses, or how many boxes you tick on a form. CPD is about capturing useful experiences and assessing the practical benefits of what you have learned. There is one decisive question that you should ask yourself to evaluate every piece of learning: “what can you do now that you couldn’t do before?” Similarly, when you record your CPD, it is the value of the activity that counts. It is not what you did, but how you can now use what you learned. Length of time and experience in payroll or pensions does not mean that you do

not have any CPD requirements. Things are changing all of the time, and payroll and pensions professionals cannot afford to stand still. You need to keep up to date, maintain and develop your skills to ensure that you are effective, efficient and compliant. If you are a payroll professional would you have been ready for automatic enrolment if you had not updated your knowledge? Probably not. The CIPP recognises that as members you are all keeping up to date and committed to professionalism in payroll and pensions. As part of the CIPP’s Royal Charter, we have to evidence this and that is why members who use designatory letters after their name are required to complete their CPD logs throughout their membership year, or at least prior to renewal.

So, make sure that you are proactive in completing your CPD log. If you enter the information at the time of learning then CPD will be a quick process that does not impact on your busy day.

What counts as CPD? l Using the CIPP’s advisory service – the advisory service can count towards CPD because you are asking a question to which you did not previously know the answer, therefore when you have been advised of the answer you have learned something and any form of learning and improving knowledge counts towards CPD. l CIPP national forums – these are a great way to learn about developments in the industry and achieve your CPD. There is still availability for the national forums which can be booked at payrollevents.org.uk and are free to attend for CIPP members. (See table of dates/locations.) l Internal meetings at which you learn about the organisations objectives or processes that improve your on the job knowledge.
