OCEAN FISHING REPORT By Terrence Berg 976-TUNA.com

LONG RANGE SPECTACULAR: The Royal Polaris was wrap- ping up its current trip early this week and reported in with exceptional fishing on the giant yellowfin. Most of the tuna were om the 80 to 120-pound range, but fish over 200 were reported each day. Big fish of the trip was a 300-pounder caught by Susan Gentry, the first that size of the season. There was also a 277-pounder and several other from 200 to 230 pounds. It doesn’t get much better.

SAN DIEGO LOCAL FLEET FISHING MEXICO: The rockfish season may be closed in California waters, but the Mexican rockfish season is in full swing, and half-day to 1 1/2-day trips are running out of the San Diego Landings daily. The Old Glory out of H&M Landing has been ham- mering the rockfish and ling cod on its 1 1/2-day weekend trip. This past weekend, there were 24 anglers who had limits of ling cod (120) and the best was a 24-pounder, and there were another 15 fish in the 20 pound class with probably 50 fish from 10 to 15 pounds. Add in 65 reds and 55 other rockfish and you can understand why Skipper Joe Phillips said it “was the best cod trip I’ve ever been on.” But even the half-day and three-quarter day boats are seeing excellent scores. The Premier, also out of H&M, was out Tuesday with 19 anglers on a half-day trip and they landed 162 rockfish and one sheephead.

LOS ANGELES-ORANGE COUNTY COAST SCULPIN AND BASS: Light loads and little traffic has been what sport- boats out of the Los Angeles and Orange county landings are seeing during the rockfish closure, but there has been a decent pick on both calico and sand bass and limit-style fishing on the sculpin for anglers jumping on local half- day and three-quarter day boats. The Spitfire out of Marina del Rey has been pretty typical of the action this week. On Tuesday, the 12 anglers on board had limits of sculpin (60), 26 legal sand bass, five legal calicos, 10 perch, and a hal- ibut. The New Del Mar on a pair of half-day runs had limits of 175 sculpin for the 35 anglers on the two trips, along with 40 perch, three sand bass, and two calicos.

CORONADO ISLANDS YELLOWTAIL: The Mission Belle out of Point Loma Sportfishing continues to target the yellow- tail on three-quarter day trips to the Coronado Islands. While 29 anglers on Tuesday had just five yellows and 10 rockfish, the Monday trip with 17 anglers had a score of 21 yellows, 15 rockfish, and one ling cod. On Sunday, 22 anglers had 21 yellowtail and seven rockfish. This mid-win- ter yellowtail action just won’t seem to go away.

LOBSTER ACTION: The lobster action has continued pret- ty consistent for the sportboats running trips all along the coast with an average of about a bug per angler per trip and better scores some evenings. The Gail Force out of LA Harbor Sportfishing has been averaging better than two bugs per angler early this week.

INSTRUCTIONAL CHARTERS: The staff of 976-TUNA is hosting instructional charters throughout the year, offer- ing advice to beginning or veteran anglers and on-the- water teaching of techniques for different saltwater species. The charters are done for this year, but check the website for winter-spring charters this coming year or call (562)-352-0012; 976-TUNA.com.

SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAIN WATERS

SILVERWOOD: The bite has been tough, but a few stripers and catifhs continue to show. Water levels have come back up and the top action on the catfish has been off the dock and in Miller Canyon on anchovies and chicken liver. Packa Sundora, Moreno Valley, landed an 8-8 catfish and 10 stripers to two pounds fishing anchovies off the docks. The stripers are best off the dock, at the dam, and in Chemise on swimbaits. The panfish action slowed way down. Trout have been slow to fair, but a DFW plant this week should perk this action. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explain- ing consumption recommendations: oehha.ca.gov/fish/so_cal/pdf_zip/081013KioskadvySilver wood.pdf. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is

open seven days a week. Information: marina (760) 389- 2299, state park(760) 389-2281, Silverwood Country store (760) 389-2423.

BIG BEAR LAKE: Very little fishing pressure. Water temps continue to fall and the trout bite remains slow to fair. Best bite in the east end of the lake on PowerBait and small lures. The mouth of Metcalf Bay to Windy Point over to Lagonita are the top spots now. The marinas and public boat launches are all closed. For more information: Big Bear Sporting Goods (909) 866-3222.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

DIAMOND VALLEY: The trout action is good to excellent after both Mt. Lassen and DFW plants last week week. The last Mt. Lassen plant was Dec. 18, and the DFW added one to two-pound brown trout on Dec. 17. Next plant of Lassen rainbows will be next week. The best bite has been on nightcrawlers, PowerBait, Roostertails, and mini jigs. Top fish reported at the marina were a pair at 5.31 and 5.32 pounds caught by John Sullivan, 5, Riverside. The stripers are off and on this week in the between moon phase. Trolling swim baits or white flies has been the best bet, but anglers tossing swimbaits (shad or trout-like) have also done pretty well when the fish have been up boiling. Most of the stripers have been three to six pounds. The largemouth bass bite is slow to fair in deep water on drop-shot plastics and nightcrawlers fished in 50 to 60 feet of water. Most are smaller fish under three pounds. Some fish also come up each day to chase shad and trout. Few catfish or panfish anglers this past week. Boats inspected and tagged “quagga free” at Diamond Valley will also be allowed on Perris and Silverwood. For general lake and launch information, call (800) 590-LAKE. For fishing and boat rental info call the marina at (951) 926-7201 or dvmarina.com or Last Chance Bait and Tackle at (951) 658- 7410 or lastchancetackle.com.

PERRIS: There continues to be a fair bass and bluegill action, and some very good catches of the panfish have been reported. Best report was a 25-fish limit posted by Sonny de la Torre, Riverside, on homemade jigs from the end end. His stringer of redear and bluegill had fish to 1-8. The panfish are showing in deep water spots around the lake, including off the marina docks. Small jigs tipped with bait or small nightcrawlers or red worms fished alone have been the best baits. The top bass reported was a 7.8- pounder landed by Chris Cisneros, Perris, on a plastic off the marina dock. Nina Cooper, Yucca Valley, landed a four- pound bass on a nightcrawler. Swimbaits, plastics, and crawdads have been the top baits. The fish are in 15 to 40 feet of water most of the time and slow presentations have been the best, even for the swimbaits. Trout are fair from Sail Cove to Lots 11 and 12 along the west side of the lake. Trout have been best on Kastmasters, Roostertails, and SuperDupers. There were DFW plants this week and two weeks ago. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged Silverwood or Diamond Valley will also be allowed at Perris. Information: marina (951) 657-2179, state park (951) 940-5600.

SKINNER: The striper bite remains fair to good, and a few quality fish over four pounds have been landed again this week. Top fish reported was a 7-8 landed by Allen Mackenzie, Murrieta, on a shad-color crankbait. Jeff Petricka, Temecula, landed a six-pounder on live shad in the north bay, while Yoshhiko Shimura, Hemet, had a 4-8 on shad off the north shore. Live shad continues to be the top baits, but the umbrella and Sibiki rigs, crankbaits, and trolled shad-like lures or white flies have also been good bets. Top spots remain the east end, north of Ramp No. 2, and mid-lake, but the north shore areas have also turned on this past week. Other species have slowed way down, including the catfish. Information: store (951) 926-1505 or marina (951) 926-8515.
