Jan. 18 • Underwater Parks Day, La Jolla. Families are invited to celebrate the fifth annual event as part of the institution’s Science, Exploration and Adventure (SEA) Days. San Diego Anglers invite saltwater bass fisherman from all over to compete in a one-day event on San Diego Bay, at the Shelter Island launch ramp. Anglers will compete for a first-place cash prize of $1,500 for the largest five-bass sack. A bar- becue and a raffle will follow the tourna- ment at the Shelter Island launch ramp park area. Feb. 1 • 25th Annual Women’s Sailing Convention, Newport Beach. Big Bay Whale Days Festival


Begins Jan. 25 SAN DIEGO — Migrating California gray whales will be celebrated at the sixth annual San Diego Big Bay Whale Festival, a daylong free event, set to run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 25 at the Port Pavilion on the Broadway Pier. The family community event will showcase California gray whales and ocean life with a variety of interactive activities that include a “walk through gray whale,” live sea creatures and a kids’ sea life mural coloring project. Fun- oriented children’s activities include face painting, two giant bounce houses and a trackless train. In addition, there will be live music on the “Whale of a Stage” from the


James Gibson Band, Moon Dog and Jinnah Williams. Event participants can also enjoy a performance by the Flamenco with Roots youth dance group, free giveaways from radio station Kyxy and Energy 103. Numerous vendors will have exhibits at the festival, including whale watching cruise operators. Throughout January, USS Midway Museum and the Maritime Museum of

The class will discuss how to be prepared and meet Coast Guard fire safety requirements — including on-the-dock demonstrations of how to deploy fire hoses.
