Casting Heavy Truck Component Via Lost Foam Reduces Machining


Cast Component: Differential carrier. Material: 65-45-12 ductile iron. Process: Lost foam.


Application: Housing and support for power transfer com- ponent.


Casting Supplier: Grede Columbiana, Columbiana, Ala.


• Previously produced via green sand, the 136-lb. component reduced stock significantly by combining lost foam patterns.


• Machining was reduced by designing certain features to be used as-cast, and additional features were added at no cost that would have required extensive machining in green sand.


• Te redesigned tool allows for inserts that can produce multiple part numbers, which reduces costs associated with additional tooling for lower volume part numbers.
