Team USA’s Brittany Dashiell dishes on what to do with the ball in the midfi eld

>> WHAT I DO

CHANGE IT UP

I’m working as a physical therapy tech in Baltimore and taking classes because I want to go to physician’s assistant graduate school. I want to go somewhere different again, like I did by going to Florida, like North Carolina or California. Change it up for a bit.

MISS

COLLEGE ALREADY

Going to college at Florida was amazing. (Dashiell was part of the Gators’ inaugural recruiting class and their fi rst Tewaaraton Award fi nalist.) My friends would be telling me how they’re shoveling snow off the fi eld for practice, and we’d be lying out at the pool before practice. It was like being on vacation every day. I loved it.

HOPE FOR CHANGES

Women’s lacrosse needs more TV games and a stall rule. That drives me crazy. Maybe like a keep-it-in-the-box rule, like the men’s rule used to be, after a certain amount of time.

As soon as I receive the ball off a draw or in the midfi eld, the fi rst thing I want to do is get my head up. You want to be able to see the fi eld and your options.

Keep your stick protected. If she’s on my left side, keep the stick on your right, so it’s defender, then me, then ball.

My Inspiration Caitlyn McFadden is an amazing

midfi elder. She’s great on both sides of the fi eld. She has the hardest shot I’ve ever seen. She’s quick. I’ve always looked up to her, and having her coach me down at Florida for a year was awesome. (McFadden, a 2010 Tewaaraton winner at Maryland and Team USA midfi elder, was an assistant at Florida before taking the same job at Maryland.)

My Team USA

Experience It’s a group of crazy girls. They always have so much energy and they really bring you up all the time. There’s a point when it gets to practice where a switch turns and they get intense. But they’re always out to have fun.

I want to move away from the defender. I don’t want to move into her because she can check me, or I could body check myself and lose the ball.

>> MY FAVORITE DRILL

I really liked “steal the bacon” when I was really little, because I love ground balls. Now it’s probably 3-on-2 where we’re man-up on offense.
