8 | March 2014 | HVR ACR Show is a resounding success

Despite challenging weather condi- tions, the ACR Show 2014, which took place at the NEC in Birmingham last week, proved to be a resounding success.

Final visitor numbers are currently subject to ABC audit, however, attend- ance was strong on all three days of the show - even on the final day, which is traditionally the quietest. Event director, Jan Thorpe, said: “Despite atrocious travelling condi- tions, visitors were undaunted. There were packed aisles, stands and seminar theatres throughout the three days of the exhibition.” “We are delighted at the positive response of exhibitors, which con- firms the show’s continued success. I would like to thank the industry, its organisations and end users for their support. We look forward to building on this success for the ACR Show 2016, which returns to the NEC in two years’ time, on February 16 to 18,” she added. The buzz at the show was height-

launch VRV IV. Our stand has been busy throughout, particularly on the middle day but, pleasingly, also on the third day. The show has delivered what we wanted to achieve.”

ened by the high profile seminar programme, featuring packed sessions led by industry experts. Particularly well attended were presentations on the recent changes to the F-Gas Regulations, The Greening of the Supermarkets, and updates on the lat- est advances in cooling and heat pump technology.

Headline sponsor Daikin UK used

the show as the launch-pad for the lat- est generation of its ground-breaking air conditioning system, VRV IV Heat Recovery system. Daikin UK marketing manager, Giulia Draycott, said: “The show pro- vided an excellent platform for us to

Exhibitors praised the quality and buying power of visitors. Ted Berry, managing director of Gallant Air Conditioning, said: “The exhibition has been a great success for us. We have received solid enquiries and the quality of visitors has been excellent.” For some, the strong representa-

tion of hands-on engineers was key. John Pritchard of Johnson Controls said: “Our focus is on contractors and service companies, and we have seen some extremely good people - and plenty of them. Our stand has been busy throughout.” The next show, ACR 2016, takes place in Hall 9 of the NEC, on February 16-18. Construction continues upward trend

Construction activity rose in the fourth quarter, according to the latest Construction Trade Survey published on 10 February by the Construction Products Association (CPA). The report reveals that the increase

in activity in the quarter is the first time in more than five years that the industry recorded three consecutive quarters of growth. Companies across all areas reported increased output, including building contractors, SMEs, specialist contractors, civil engineers and product manufacturers.

According to the survey, private and public new housing were the key drivers of construction growth in Q4 with balances of 20% and 32%, respec- tively. In addition, building contractors reported activity drops of 13% and 15%, respectively, in housing repair and maintenance and non-housing repair and maintenance.

Economics director at the CPA, Dr

Noble Francis, said: “The recovery, which started in 2013 Q2, continued, though risks remain. The rises in activity were slower than in previous quarters, and orders for new work similarly decel- erated, potentially highlighting uncer- tainty amongst contractors as to whether the recovery would be sustained.” He continued: “Growth was driven

by the housing sector, though this was partially offset by a drop in repair and maintenance work. Building contractors, SMEs and civil engineers reported rises in output, although Q4 levels were not as strong as Q3. Indeed, only product manufacturers saw activity levels higher in Q4 than Q3.” Stephen Ratcliffe, director UKCG,

said: “While contractors reported a slowdown in output growth this quarter, the trend over the last year remains one of modest recovery. Unlike housing, the

broader construction sector remains a lagging indicator and we would expect the main growth to come later than the wider economy.

“Rising labour costs highlight the need to tackle skills shortages as we move towards recovery, and for a clear pipeline of future work so firms have the certainty to invest in apprentice- ships and other long term training programmes.” Julia Evans, chief executive of the National Federation of Builders added: “These figures highlight the fragility of the construction industry’s recovery, which is being driven by house building. Ongoing investment and future pros- pects point to further growth for the construction industry as a whole but as the economy recovers, it is important for companies to be at least as vigilant about costs, cash flow and late payment as they were during the downturn.”

Cool-Therm launches new company

Cool-Therm has launched a new com- pany dedicated to the design and man- agement of specialist low carbon, high efficiency air conditioning systems and energy audits. Cool-Therm (Consultants) Ltd will be headed by directors Alex Strong and Rob Young and will offer a nationwide service from Bristol, Cardiff, Reading and Wolverhampton.

In addition, the company will offer

F-Gas compliance support for end users and facility management companies, plus air conditioning and chiller service and maintenance project management. The company will specialise in tai- lored improvement and retrofit schemes for both DX air conditioning and chilled water systems, for industrial process applications, data centres and com- mercial buildings. It will also provide comprehensive TM44 energy audits

on existing systems, to highlight where cost-effective savings can be made, and offer Carbon Footprint Assessments and refrigerant management, F-Gas and F-gas phase-down support. Cool-Therm was one of the first companies in the world to apply ground- breaking compact centrifugal compres- sor technology in chiller applications, working with the latest low GWP HFO refrigerants.
