Heat pumps help Ipswich school ELCO UK, formerly MHS Boilers, has supplied two 24kW AEROTOP T air source heat pumps to Heath Primary School in Kesgrave, Ipswich. The heat pumps have been installed outside a new standalone teaching block to provide central heating services for six classrooms, two group rooms and toilet facilities. The new school building project was designed to create a healthy learning environment with excellent sustainable credentials for an extra 210 pupils. With the cost of delivering mains gas prohibitive, the ELCO heat pumps were specified due to their ease of siting and installation. Combined with a low temperature heating circuit using underfloor heating, as well as improved air tightness regulations, the heat pump heating system has been designed to greatly minimise utility costs. AEROTOP T heat pumps produce comfortable thermal heat with free energy from the ambient air. They can be installed both inside and outside buildings, giving specifiers and architects a wide variety of siting options when planning new buildings or renovating existing ones. The heat pumps are equipped for external installation with an extremely robust and corrosion-resistant housing. The range is available in nine models with outputs up to 34.4kW and COPs up to 3.7. Makita launches tool cases Makita has introduced a neat and comprehensive range of connector cases for tools that are supplied without a carry case, or for people who have purchased additional ‘body-only’ cordless machines. Moulded from rugged ABS in the traditional Makita brand colour, four depths of MAKPAC cases are available. The matching width and length of 295mm x 395mm is then complemented by the four alternative depths of 105mm, 155mm, 215mm and 315mm. Strong moulded handles fold flush into recesses in the case lids, and handgrip mouldings enable easy removal from the stack when the latches are unfastened. The generic footprint of the Makpac connector cases also makes them compatible with certain other established brands of similar stacking cases. The latches that fasten the individual case lids slide further up to lock into the base clips of the case placed above, allowing many cases to be stacked and locked together for safe and stable transport, saving space in transit and storage. The MAKPAC hard shell connector cases are precision moulded to provide a dustproof and shower-proof transport and storage system for valuable Makita power tools. Makita

Council gets energy-saving boilers Shire Hall, the headquarters and main administrative centre for Cambridgeshire County Council, has refurbished its boiler plant room with three Remeha Gas 310 Eco Pro 10-section boilers. When the existing gas-fired pressure jet boilers were found to be leaking, the council’s engineering services manager, Roy Drayton, provided a brief for a complete redesign of the existing heating system, including Remeha Gas 310 Eco Pro 10-section condensing boilers. Atkins worked on the project.

Roy Drayton said: “Reliability was a key factor in this heating replacement project. We also saw this as an opportunity to improve our energy efficiency and reduce both carbon emissions and fuel consumption in line with the council’s environmental commitments. The Remeha boilers met all the criteria.”

The installation was carried out by a team of qualified engineers from Imtech Aqua Maintenance, the principal maintenance contractor for Cambridgeshire County Council. With the boilers in place and fully commissioned, Mr Drayton is looking forward to lower fuel bills. Remeha

Big Foot Systems rebrands Big Foot Systems has launched a new look company brand and a marketing campaign entitled ‘Simply a Better Way’ to help promote its innovative rooftop building services support systems. Despite the downturn in the construction industry, the Sussex company has doubled its core business every year for the last four years. Set for further growth, it hopes that the new look branding and marketing campaign will highlight its non-penetrative support solutions which it says offer huge benefits when compared to traditional methods.

The new marketing campaign includes the launch of a new brochure and website at www. bigfootsupport.com. The website also features a new corporate video. Commercial manager, Dan Rushton, said: “We are launching the ‘Simply A Better Way’ marketing campaign at Big Foot Systems to promote the benefits of our non-penetrative frameworks. Many in the construction industry use traditional support solutions for rooftop building services unaware of the time, materials and labour savings our products can offer. Not only that but our systems reduce the risk of roof leaks and thermal bridging both which have a cost implication for the building owner.” Big Foot Systems

Heat pumps make a TV appearance Mitsubishi Electric’s Ecodan heat pumps have been used in the restoration of a Victorian pumping house near Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, which recently featured on the Channel 4 series Restoration Man. Alison and Matthew Grey spent considerable time researching renewable heating options for the building. Mrs Grey said: “We knew that heating a building of this size would be extremely costly without some form of sustainable energy. Ecodan was streets ahead of other heat pumps on the market in terms of performance, flexibility and support from the manufacturer.”

The Greys sought the advice of Tony Owen of AOS Solar, an installer of renewable technology across Hertfordshire, Essex and North London. An approved Ecodan installer, the firm has vast experience of heat pumps and photovoltaic panels. Certified under the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), AOS Solar customers are also eligible for any available government funded grants, such as the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The new home uses a 14kW Ecodan for the underfloor heating and the 5kW unit for the hot water supply. Mrs Grey is confident that the heat pump system will pay for itself within a couple of years.
