ow that it’s March with the new plant life all around us, does the term “Victory
Garden” mean anything to you? If you are of a certain age (older), it was a common custom during World War II; families cultivating their own gardens to be more frugal and self-suffi cient. My parents tell me they now realize how much healthier they were.
In 2014 we need to return to those days of becoming more self-
suffi cient for our own health and well-being. Most of us cannot begin to know all the myriad ways our food has been altered. If your own garden is not a possibility, then we need to turn to what’s next best—our local farmers. They can supply non-chemical, nutritious fruits, vegetables, eggs and plants to grow in your own pots (such as herbs). This issue celebrates some of our local heroes of the on- going battle for better nutrition.
