ICS Cool Energy has provided a cost-effective, ‘green’ solution using a state-of-the-art air source heat pump for a property built in 1965, which is undergoing major refurbishment.

1

An i-NRG air source heat pump was supplied to replace the existing oil boiler, which provided heating via a blown air ducted distribution system. During the preliminary technical survey, ICS Cool Energy engineers identified an existing heat loss of less than 35 watts per square metre. The energy efficient heat pump operates using a 200-litre buffer tank and facilitates heating distribution with a 300-litre optimised unvented cylinder, providing domestic hot water storage. The system uses an integrated controller, which manages the complete installation including the heat pump, under-floor heating, radiator and fan coil circuits, with the added benefit of providing solar thermal control.

From the heating buffer tank, three medium temperature heating flows are circulated via independent circulation pumps to a basement radiator circuit, a ground floor under-floor heating system, and a fan coil circuit to the first and second floor bedrooms. The heating circuit operates between 35°C to 45°C temperature output flow, with the domestic hot water circuit with a 60°C output temperature. Operating in ambient temperatures of -5°C, the heating requirement now proves to be around 34 watts per square metre, in line with the heat loss calculation summary provided at the start of the project by ICS Cool Energy’s engineers. The new heating system provides manageable temperature control 365 days a year with minimal maintenance and operational involvement. The heat pump unit met the design criteria and exceeded requirements for a low carbon, low cost, and highly practical heating system. ICS Cool Energy www.icstemp.com

QUALITY Equipment Distributors (QED) is a leading UK designer and supplier of modular bar, coffee shop and food service equipment. The company was recently appointed to supply a complete coffee shop display system for the newly opened Bar Unico Lincoln. Bar Unico is owned by former Nottingham Forest and Grimsby Town footballer Gio Carchedi and his mother Diana.

Following a great deal of research into the most appropriate food service equipment for the premises, Gio and Diana selected the Italian-made Deblasi Zen modular coffee shop system, for which QED is the exclusive UK distributor.

The scheme consists of hot and cold display counters, a 45 degree corner unit and a 14-flavour gelato display freezer for traditional Italian ice cream. The complete system was installed in one day by QED’s own refrigeration engineers and shopfitters. Giovanni and Diana were impressed with the authentic Italian style of the Deblasi Zen system and the expertise and professionalism of the QED team. AIREDALE International has been working with Custodian Data Centre to design and build an intelligent, energy-efficient, resilient cooling system that significantly reduces the need for mechanical cooling. The data centre, based in the modern broadcast hub known as Maidstone Studios in Kent, provides fresh air free cooling up to 80% of the year and regularly achieves PUE figures below 1.15 (ratio of total facility power usage divided by IT equipment power usage). Airedale’s ACIS solution controls the Air Handling Units (AHUs), Airedale Ultima Compact super quiet (30kW-450kW) and Ultima Compact FreeCool (75kW-

450kW) chillers in addition to Custodian’s legacy Building Management System (BMS), providing full N+1 redundancy.

The ACIS controls software also manages temperature and humidity in the data centre and, through integration with Custodian’s BMS, provides 24/7 monitoring. With a system using direct fresh air in a data centre cooling environment, Airedale software is critical in ensuring temperature set point and humidity are maintained. The collaborative approach resulted in a scalable solution, with infrastructure and pipework installed at the start, allowing further air handling and chiller units to be added with minimum disruption and without incurring unnecessary additional cost as data centre demand grows.

Powrmatic has supplied a range of Midea high wall and cassette heat pump air conditioners to provide cooling and heating at Appliances Direct’s showroom and sales office in South Normanton, Derbyshire.

Appliances Direct’s hvac business manager, Victor Stoica, said: “We sell Midea air conditioners because they are high quality and good value for money. Therefore, when we decided to install air conditioning in our showroom it made sense to use Midea units so we could also demonstrate them to customers. It was also a good opportunity to provide more efficient air conditioning in the sales office, which had previously been using portable air conditioners.”

The units were installed by Appliances Direct’s sister company AirConDirect. Powrmatic www.powrmatic.co.uk
