ParkWord February 2014
Like branded attractions? Then you’ll love this issue! We’ve got an exclusive interview with the team working on the new Angry Birds 4D movie. Turn to page 26 to find out more, and how you could license it at your park. Also in England, Drusillas Park has just launched its first Hello Kitty ride, a branded set of tea cups from Zamperla that will soon be joined by other attractions as part of the new Hello Kitty Secret Garden (see page 20). Despite the fame enjoyed by Drayton Manor with Thomas Land, Drusillas was actually the first park in the country to introduce Thomas & Friends when it opened a themed railway in 2007. This season it will also host events featuring Peppa Pig and Scooby-Doo. We have an update on the new Diagon Alley extension to The Wizarding
World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando (page 12), linking both Islands of Adventures and Universal Studios, where guests will arrive via a steam- hauled Hogwarts Express at King’s Cross station. I was in London recently, where I was amazed to see that they had created a replica of the station right next to St Pancras, yet on an even larger scale! Elsewhere in Orlando, Disney has officially broken ground on its Avatar themed land at Walt Disney World, where it will recreate the computer animated world of Pandora for Animal Kingdom guests (page 14). Whilst I found the story in James Cameron’s Avatar film rather clichéd when I saw it in the cinema a few years back, the 3D imagery was stunning. During one of the duller sequences, I left my seat and asked a tall man standing in the aisle the way to the bathroom. “Oh, actually, I’m in the movie,” he replied. We’ve also got an interview with Greg Lombardo of 20th Century Fox Consumer Products (page 28), discussing the studio’s theme park plans in Malaysia, which will feature such intellectual property (IP) as Ice Age, Rio and Night at the Museum, plus news of forthcoming new attractions featuring Snoopy, Postman Pat, In The Night Garden and more. Sometimes I’m not sure these days if I’m editing a magazine about theme parks or film and television franchises. The truth is, of course, that parks and real-world attractions are increasingly an integral part of many IP owners’ “360°” brand plans.
