QBiggest influence?
A Probably my first manager at IBM. He gave me way more responsibility than I probably should have had as an industrial placement student, but it made a massive difference to everything I have done since.
QMost valuable lesson learnt?
A Communication quality is vital. An email is a letter by another name, you don’t get to “discommunicate” if you get it wrong.
QOne company to watch?
A Probably Microsoft. It is going through some big changes in the end-user experience, whilst completely remodelling its public and private enterprise offerings. It’s great to see how the company is adapting.
QIf you weren’t an IT exec, what would you like to be?
A I’d love to be involved in non-IT design. Renewable energy, electric transport,
power storage: there are so many things that will make a massive change, just like IT has.
QWhere does the time machine take you and why?
A I want to take people back and remind them what it was like before
mobile communications and email.... and then back again to today to ask them if they feel more efficient. I wouldn’t want to live at any other time.

QIn charge for the day, what world problem would you address?
A Some method to balance the needs of developing economies with mature
ones. How do you ask developing countries to pay for the processes, compliance, safety and environmental standards we expect today, when you haven’t had 50 years of the economic benefit to fund it?
Q Sport - spectator or participator?
A I run and cycle for fitness at home, and watch junior football every weekend
(I have no choice). I enjoy rugby as a spectator: our house is split over England/Wales constantly.
QYour three desert island music choices?
A Somewhat eclectic choice inspired by online streaming services. At the moment Kaiser Chiefs, Of Monsters & Men and Manic Street Preachers.
QGuess who’s coming to dinner – your five guests?
A F1 driver Sebastian Vettel, legendary engineer, IK Brunel, James Dyson of
vacuum cleaner fame, actor David Tennant and athlete Kelly Holmes.
QYour hero or heroine from history?
A It’s got to be James Watt. His improvements to the first steam engine led to railways, which led to standard time…which is now used for GPS and everything else we try to achieve.

QYou’re hero or heroine alive and well?
A Probably James Dyson, for proving that brilliant design wins out. It changes an industry. He’s just the more recent in a long line. Innovation is always required, the need never goes away.
QWhen it comes to energy resources (for data centres/IT) is the glass half-empty
or half-full?
A Individual components may be ‘efficient’ but how much useful ‘work’
does the datacentre do? I regularly see clients whose storage is 30 per cent efficient (raw to actual data), and the servers are less than 50 per cent utilised. The relative merits of component A over B is irrelevant at these low efficiency levels. Of course, we can help.
QPet hates?
A Receiving an email asking me to call someone back. Why didn’t they just call?
QGoing out or staying in?
A A bit of both. I travel a lot so the temptation is to become hermit-like at home, but balance is good.
