editor’s note

A daunting future As the threat of a triple dip recession recedes, it’s clear that the ICT market is enjoying a period of great opportunity and, whisper it quietly, there seem to be plenty of customers ready to invest in Cloud, Big Data and the like. Our headline news story talks of worldwide IT spending in trillions of dollars (which has me remembering, gloomily, that the US debt is also quoted in trillions), but our ‘digitalization’ news story suggests that many CIOs ‘feel overwhelmed by the prospect of building digital leadership while renovating the core of IT infrastructure and capability for the digital future’.

The transition from traditional, internal IT resources to modern, dynamic external managed services is likely to be a long one, as it requires several leaps of faith by enterprise IT managers across the globe. While the history of the IT industry is littered with various milestones, the advent of the Digital Age is, arguably, the most significant milestone, and step change, of all. Evolution – folks doing much the same as they always have, only faster, bigger, modular, even virtual – is giving way to revolution – different ways of working, with much of the underlying infrastructure provided outside of the enterprise.

Whatever one’s reaction to the present IT revolution – scepticism or enthusiasm – the feeling of being overwhelmed is, surely, a near universal one? After all, the data centre has remained the same since Noah was building his Ark (no pun intended), but those in charge are now being asked to re-think everything they have been taught about both the facilities and IT aspects.

If DCS helps our readers to make this daunting journey, then we’re meeting our number one objective.
