t is hard to believe that just over 15 years ago the R/C airplane world was turned on its collective head by the re- lease of Real Flight. Then 10 years ago along came Real Flight G3, where this “3rd Generation Flight Simulator” possessed “Real Physics 3D Flight Performance”, came with both airplanes and helicopters, and had many flying sites to choose from. Subse- quently, many more airplanes, gliders and helis, as well as flying sites, were added as upgrades. Fast forward 10 years and we now have tremendously improved graphics and an upgraded controller.
Given the rapid changes in computer speeds and the quality of software over the last decade, most of us presume that things will get better with time. So what makes
Real Flight 7 worth this review? Well, to paraphrase a catch phrase: “This isn’t your grandfather’s flight simulator!”
Real Flight 7 is available in two versions, first as an upgrade, and secondly as a new installation. Originally the two versions were going to be reviewed independently, but ye-olde editor has been up to his eyeballs in busy-ness, so I am going to give you an overview of both versions.
Upgrade and full version Many of us have an earlier version of Real Flight, and are either happy with the Inter- link Controller we have, or with the inter- face to use our own transmitters, and in spite of the improvements in the software, don’t want to go for the bigger (and costlier)
“complete” package, so the upgrade fits this particular bill. This version is able to work with any edition of G4, G5 or G6 software, and with either the Interlink Plus, or Inter- link Elite controllers. So, as long as the Win- dows version is XP or newer, you are good to go. As everything else associated with the upgrade works the same as in the “full” kit, everything said below applies here, as well. The minimum computer requirements (either desktop or laptop) for all versions are: Intel Pentium 1 GHz or equivalent processor, 512 MB RAM, 10 GB hard drive space, a DVD drive, 3D accelerated video card with 32MB dedicated video memory and full DirectX 9 compliance (Shadier mod- el 2.0 or better). Note: the software contains a DirectX download.
