Cirrus Research’ doseBadge proves its worth in employee hearing investigation
Adaptaflex
secures contract for supply of electrical conduit systems for Birmingham Metro Trams
systems to provide protection for critical electrical wiring on 19 new Urbos III trams which have been specified by Centro, the West Midlands regional transport authority for the Midland Metro System. The first of a new fleet of hi-tech trams is being shipped to the West Midlands and will initially be used between Birmingham and Wolverhampton, before being run later on the new extension to Birmingham's New Street Station. Meirion Buck, Technical Manager for the Adaptaflex brand at Thomas & Betts comments: "Our close co-operation with CAF's engineers on successive projects and our Technical Support has ensured that CAF's vehicles are always equipped with the most technologically advanced Adaptaflex conduit systems."

AF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles S.A.) of Spain has selected Adaptaflex conduit
instrumental in an employee hearing loss investigation in the U.S recently. The Patterson Pump Company, one of the world's leading suppliers of quality pumps, bought two Cirrus Research' doseBadges and a reader unit to update to the latest wireless technology that would allow test data to be transferred direct to the company's computers.

But the doseBadge really came into its own when the Company’s Hearing Protection Programme picked up an employee who had experienced a “Threshold
Shift” in their hearing
compared to his baseline hearing test. A Standard Threshold Shift, or STS, is defined in OSHA’s occupational noise exposure standard at 29 CFR 1910.95(g)(10)(i) as a change in hearing threshold (relative to the baseline audiogram for that employee) of an average of 10 decibels (dB) or more, at specific frequencies, in one or both ears. The company immediately conducted a dosimeter test of the employee using the doseBadge but the test revealed noise levels in his work environment were at a level which indicated the cause of his hearing loss was coming from somewhere outside of work. Greg Dobson, the Environmental & Safety Manager, explained: “We immediately began investigating the cause of the employee’s hearing loss and found the employee was participating in several activities outside of work which generated high noise levels and in addition found the employee was taking medication which is known to cause hearing loss over time. All this information was forwarded to an audiologist and the final outcome of the investigation was determined to be “non-work related.” By thoroughly investigating the possible causes, Patterson Pumps was able to determine if a standard threshold shift was work related or not, and the first step was to conduct a time-weighted average of the work environment – exactly what the doseBadge is designed to do.

umicom, working closely with Thorn Lighting, is helping the University of Lincoln to meet stringent waste management targets
by ensuring that old luminaires removed during a refurbishment project are disposed of in compliance with the WEEE Directive. The University has set itself strict targets with a view to improving its waste management performance. This environmental strategy has been clearly demonstrated during a large refurbishment programme to modernise 17 buildings in its halls of residence estate, comprising 1037 furnished student bedrooms. The refurbishment includes replacement of existing lighting with a lower energy solution using Thorn LED and T5 fluorescent luminaires. In the first phase of the refurbishment programme 1479 luminaires were removed, with the waste being segregated into skips provided by Lumicom. The second phase began in July 2013 with a further 1429 luminaires being disposed of under the WEEE Directive. The final phase in 2014 will complete the refurbishment of all 17 blocks.

pirol Disc Springs provide a solution for design engineers in their on-going challenge to increase the productivity of turret punch presses. .Traditional turret punch press tool designs have included Coil Springs to facilitate the pushing of the punch through the sheet metal and to pull it out. The spring automatically retracts the punch and this allows the ram to only have to work in one direction.
The result reduces wear and extends the cycle life of the
punch press. However, in a traditional press, the material type and material thickness to be punched has been limited by the Coil Spring’s inability to produce a high force in a short linear distance.
In these situations, Coil
Springs can have a negative effect on the quality of the formed product and efficiency of the manufacturing process. To overcome this problem, Spirol Disc Springs can be stacked in series to provide a greater, more consistent stripping force than Coil Springs and require less space. They are becoming an instrumental component in the advancement of turret punch press tooling.
