Feature Exhibition Preview Engineering in a nutshell

Southern Manufacturing & Electronics returns to FIVE, Farnborough, on 12th-13th February 2014 for what looks set to be another unmissable event. Electrical Engineering magazine takes a look at what’s on show

similar to every other show in the country - with perhaps the notable exception

of S

outhern Manufacturing & Electronics is certainly the most important show of its kind in the southern region. Though after years of constant growth, the exhibition nowadays exerts a substantial influence over a very much wider area than that - pulling in visitors and exhibitors from all over the country and even from con- tinental Europe and beyond. The 2013 show was the biggest and most popular in the event’s 17 year history. Show director Phil Valentine has confirmed that the 2014 show will likely be even larger, stating “We now have over 15,000m2

space in our purpose-built venue - making it bigger than five halls of the NEC combined. We are expecting that to be filled to capacity with a record breaking 800 exhibitors in 2014.” The particular allure of Southern Manufacturing is that it is large enough to attract the big brands like RS Components, Anglia Live, Component Force, REO, Delta Line and many others, but accessible enough to allow the more modest, spe- cialist vendor a look in on the action. This generates a distinctive, level playing field and a rich selection of suppliers in one place that is quite dis-

Northern Manufacturing Show. Lots to see

While the realm of machinery and heavy engineering may very well be unfamiliar

territory for Electrical

Engineering readers, there will be plenty of well known faces at Southern Manufacturing 2014 to make the jour- ney worth considering. For example, enclosures from Phoenix Meccano, Takachi Electronics Enclosures and METcase; cabling systems and compo- nents from Cabletec ICS, Cablespeed, FW Cables and Gem Cable Solutions; consumables from Ambersil, Electrolube, Henkel Loctite, tesa, and literally hundreds of other vendors, between them supplying for more or less every possible requirement, from consumables to tooling, training, clean rooms, lifting and handling gear, pack- aging and safety equipment. The show’s dedicated core of regu- lar exhibitors will be joined in 2014 by an influx of companies exhibiting for the first time. Currently around 100 of the exhibitors booked for 2014 are first timers, meaning that even if you are a regular visitor, there’ll defi- nitely be an abundance of new things to find. New exhibitors include trans-
