This month: Fabric Engine

TOOLS SPOTLIGHT

UNIQUE IN MANY respects, the Fabric Engine is a development framework for building custom tools, such as for scene assembly, rigging and animation, lighting and 2D image processing.

It’s designed for technical artists and designers familiar with scripting languages such as Python, JavaScript, MEL and MaxScript, but who don’t normally work in C++.

Fabric Engine CEO Paul Doyle says it can also be used by R&D teams in larger studios who work in C++ but want to work with an existing framework, rather than developing standard

components from scratch. “Fabric Engine’s

programming language KL is familiar to developers who work with Python or JavaScript; because Fabric’s core engine automates multi-threading, memory management, and platform specifi c programing,” he says. “Using the Fabric Splice API,

developers can create tools within a familiar digital content creation (DCC) application, and then port Fabric tools to other DCCs as well as renderers or their in-house custom dependency graphs; they can also build and use tools in the standalone Fabric framework.” The 1.13 update includes a new GPU compute feature that enables code to be executed on both the CPU and GPU without the need for additional coding, meaning developers don’t have to write separate code for the

GPU and then test their tools to see where they run faster. Fabric Engine has also just

announced a new visual programming feature, to be shown at Siggraph. This is designed to make the tool easier to learn and use.

“We hope to have it – as part of Fabric Engine 2.0 – ready for release by the end of the year,” Doyle says. The tech was recently voted 52nd in the Develop 100 Tech list ranking the top tech and tools in games. ¢
