JPG gets green light to transform brewery at Ulverston
L
eeds based civil and structural engineering consultancy JPG has been appointed to assist with the regeneration of Ulverston town centre following recent planning approval to redevelop the Old Robinsons Brewery. The sensitive project involves the redevelopment of a number of disused brewery warehouse units to deliver a 20,000 sq ft supermarket with ancillary retail and office space. The development incorporates and re-opens historic public houses on the site. An underground car park providing 90 spaces and integration with the existing public realm with new walkways and adapted highways is also included. JPG has been brought onto the professional team by Robinsons because of its specific expertise in civil and structural planning for key regional
heritage
sites where sustainability is a key priority. The brief
includes traffic assessment and highways re-engineering to include
two public car parks, drainage and flood risk advice, air quality assessments
and structural advice for all new and existing buildings to be incorporated. JPG worked with the project team through a series of sensitive public consultations to see the project through to planning approval. Chris Harding,
Director at JPG said, “The existing site has considerable heritage value which Robinson’s plans embrace with a scheme that will contribute to the vitality and viability for Ulverston town centre on the whole with a potential for 200 new jobs.

Protection for Siemens award-winning global centre of excellence
S
ince opening twelve months ago the architectural brilliance of the iconic Crystal building featuring innovative energy efficiency has dazzled over 83,000 visitors with state of the art, intelligent building management, security and fire safety controls.
The Crystal is a sustainable cities initiative by Siemens that explores the question of how to improve the cities of the future. It is home to the world’s largest exhibition focused on urban sustainability, as well as containing corporate offices and a large auditorium. The Crystal is fully equipped with innovative Siemens technologies to underpin its centre of excellence credentials. Within just a few months of opening
and having already achieved LEE accreditation, the Crystal was certified as ‘Outstanding’ by BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment), the world’s foremost environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings.
High level security and fire detection form an integral part of this iconic building. With security and safety concerns an ever present challenge for public building operators, the Crystal showcases the very latest in robust protection technologies that ensure the safety of the building, visitors and staff working within. Intelligent video surveillance, access control and intruder detection provide a seamless and unobtrusive approach to security challenges and all areas deploy the very latest in automated fire safety systems.
A Siemens Sinteso™ Fire Safety system delivers full protection across this state- of-the-art facility, intelligent fire detectors ensure there is no risk of false alarms and the subsequent disruption that this would cause. Each smoke, flame, heat and carbon monoxide detector is configured with a unique set

of parameters for each location, this eliminates the potential for false alarms as the system can differentiate between false fire phenomena such as steam, and a real indicator of fire.
For safe and timely evacuation in the event of an emergency, the Siemens E100 Voice Alarm system notifies all personnel in the area with sounders and clear voice instructions.
The Energy Centre sits at the heart of the Crystal and provides a sustainable and highly efficient supply of electrical power, heating and cooling. Siemens own Building Energy Management System (BEMS) interacts with all of the building’s components and processes to help achieve significant cost and energy savings. All mechanical systems are linked to the BEMS including heating, cooling and ventilation through to lights, blinds, sensors that detect occupancy levels and a range of important safety features. Going Underground is a new and exciting exhibition at The Crystal giving a glimpse into the future of underground rail travel and the innovative technology that will enable cities to tackle the transportation challenges of population growth and increased capacity demand.
