On 7 November, the IBMS South East Wales (Cardiff) branch held its Annual General Meeting. During the proceedings, Samuel Aboalkaz was presented with the Alan Paull Memorial Prize, which is given for the best placement student from the Cardiff Metropolitan University (previously the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff [UWIC]) Applied Biomedical Science course. The award is sponsored by Becton Dickinson in memory of Alan Paull, who was microbiology manager at the University Hospital of Wales. Chris Head-Jenner, Becton Dickinson sales manager, kindly

attended and presented the award and a cheque for £1000. The award is marked on three aspects: second-year course marks, placement scores, and the finalists are asked to give a presentation on their experience of the placement year. Sam, pictured with Chris Head-Jenner, was asked to give his winning presentation again to the branch AGM. The evening’s programme also included an item from Andy Brain, a biochemist from Aneurin Bevan Health Board, who gave an interesting and informative talk entitled ‘Let’s get stoned’.
