“For example, we might receive urgent assay requests for organ donors or recipients. Similarly, an urgent result might be required for needle stick injuries. In such instances, we can get results back to the clinicians in 45 minutes from receiving the sample in the laboratory. Tis is extremely beneficial where some kind of urgent intervention may be required depending on the result.”

At the Whittington Hospital, London, the automated Roche platform has removed the need for batching serology assays. “Previously, it was necessary to perform serology assays in batches, which could lead to delays,” explains Andrea Barrows, Biochemistry Laboratory Manager for the Whittington Hospital NHS Trust. “Now, we can put them on the system as soon as they come into the laboratory, which means faster results for antenatal and sexual health clinics as well as other areas in the hospital.”

Labour saving, space saving “Putting the Roche serology assays onto our existing Roche platform has meant that we could rationalise our equipment and save space in the serology department,” Andrea Barrows continues. “Te beauty of having these assays on our main analytical platform in Biochemistry is that we can now perform a whole range of tests - chemistry, immunoassays or serology - from a single sample tube, without having to move it from analyser to analyser.”

“Having the complete panel of serology assays on one analyser has made our workflow much smoother,” adds Jayne Harwood. “Before we had the Roche track system, we had four different serology platforms, each with just one or two assays, and some manual assays as well. Now, all our serology assays are on one platform, which saves time and is much more convenient. It is much easier for ordering reagents and we have just one point of contact.”

At Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, this has meant that the laboratory has been able to cope easily with increases in workload. “Te automated platform has improved workflows and increased our capacity,” says Chris Gaskin.

“Recently, we won a contract with a sexual health clinic for HIV testing, which meant that our HIV workload almost doubled. Having the Roche platform allowed us to absorb this additional workload easily without the need for an extra platform or additional staff for analysis. In addition, since we have the Roche MPA pre- analytical module, there is less handling of potentially infective samples, which is better for staff safety, and fewer errors in sample preparation, which is better for patient safety.”
