Continuing Professional Development: Helping it to work better for you
Continuing professional development (CPD) helps you safeguard your professional status and is mandatory for Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration and The Science Council. As part of the 2011 Members Survey, you told us ways we could make it easier for you to use and record your CPD, so the IBMS has now launched a new, improved system designed to make it easier for you. The changes (see panel) will take effect from January 2014. From 1 January 2014 the Institute office will no longer accept CPD records for validation, as this will be replaced by the process of self-validation. All records received before 31 December 2013 will be processed in accordance with the current arrangements, provided that all the necessary information has been submitted.
Members will be expected to continue to maintain their own CPD records (using the IBMS electronic record system, or manually), with local CPD officers advising on this, and,
DECEMBER 2013 SUMMARY OF CHANGES
The new CPD system offers: a model of self-validation for the award of a CPD diploma; you will no longer have to post your evidence to the IBMS for marking
a document upload feature allowing you to store electronic versions of all your evidence within your ePortfolio
simpler and more generic categories for CPD to help you decide ‘best fit’ against the HCPC requirements
the ability to edit your own record up to the point of validation, without having to contact the IBMS office
improved guidelines and forms for reflective practice that focus on outcomes and learning experience, emphasising the need to consider the effect of one’s own practice on others, irrespective of grade and qualifications.
if required, assisting in maintaining records aligned to the IBMS system. Members will be encouraged to take advantage of the IBMS electronic CPD system as this will provide greater benefits with regard to the process of self-validation.
Further details will be published on the IBMS website and in the January issue of The Biomedical Scientist. Local CPD officers will be sent information packs and notified of training days to be held at the IBMS in January and February 2014.
