OPTICAL MEASUREMENT IN THE QUALITY ASSURANCE OF ARTIFICIAL HEART COMPONENTS

DR. KURT GRAICHEN and STEFAN ESSMANN, BERLIN HEART GmbH; R. HAINICH, GFMESSTECHNIK GmbH
Up to now, the shapes of artificial heart components have been measured using tactile devices. Recently, a manufacturer adopted an optical measuring system, based on the technology of phase measuring fringe projection. The improvements include better accuracy and reproducibility in manufacturing and a more objective process management.
A pulmonary assist device, commonly named ‘artificial heart’, maintains the life preserving functions of the heart. Over a short, middle or long term it supports either one or both of the heart ventricles. With most patients, such a device is applied until a donor organ becomes available for transplantation. In some cases, the temporary unloading of the heart by the assist device can lead to a regeneration of the heart muscle, hence, a recovery of the patient. In other cases, implantable assist devices prove to be a long term alternative to transplantation.
