More tool geometries and tool types are measurable As a specialist in mass finishing machines, the manufacturer is well experienced with both optical and tactile measuring techniques. In the course of testing various measurement systems, OTEC particularly focused on high measurement accuracy when measuring cutting edges with radii below 10 µm, ease of use, suitability for a wide range of materials, easy positioning of the sample, effortless start of measurement, easy change of specimen, high resolution measurement of also highly polished components, and a clear and easy to understand documentation of measurement results. The main drawbacks of other optical measurement systems are “poor results when measuring radii below 10 µm due to a low vertical resolution, high sensitivity against ambient light and unsuitability to measure polished


components,” says OTEC. In terms of tactile measurement, the supplier considers the measurement of only a single track as insufficient because this leads to a high measurement uncertainty.


For the manufacturer of drag finishing machines it turned out that all these requests are met by InfiniteFocus. With the Alicona system, OTEC is now able to measure edge radii below 10 µm and components with flanks up to 85°. To measure those steep flanks, InfiniteFocus uses light coming from different directions. In addition, the measurement of the maximum flank angle is not restricted by the numerical aperture. This is achieved via add-ons such as optional ring light or polarisation to support the measurement of complex geometries. Also, highly polished components and materials with varying surface characteristics or reflection patterns are now measurable. This is achieved with modulated light, providing optimal illumination throughout the whole measurement area. Operators measure glossy, ground, rough, reflective and diffuse components.
