The main gear wing strut consists of a 3⁄32-inch piece of metal tubing (above) glued into a 1⁄4-inch balsa upper strut. Slip black fuel tubing over the metal tube
before bending and flattening the lower end. The cowl (at right) is made from 1⁄2-inch balsa sheet built up and carved to shape. The windscreen is thin plastic or manila folder paper folded and glued with built-in glue tabs to retain its three dimensional shape.
fuselage, adding a 1⁄8 × 1⁄4-inch stringer down their centerline. Cover formers A and B with scored and folded decking piece D1. The windscreen can be made from thin plastic or from thin manila folder cardboard. Once cut out using the flat pattern shown on the plans, fold on the dotted lines. There are four tabs which are folded down and glued under its mating surface, which will retain its three dimensional shape. Use MonoKote or dope to finish the windscreen. The wind-
screen is glued in place after the model has been painted and detailed.
The cowl is made in two pieces, a fixed lower piece glued to the fuselage and a re- movable upper piece for access to the engine. Both are built up from 1⁄2-inch balsa sheet sides and carved to shape. The removable top half of the cowl has a 1⁄8-inch ply C1 for- mer glued to the back. The two holes in C1 must align with the blind nuts in the fire- wall FW.
Test fit the engine in the cowl and drill mounting holes. Use a shaft extension to give adequate spinner clearance. Cut holes in the cowl block for the cylinder head, ex- haust and needle valve access. Apply epoxy to the inside of the cowl and front of the fire- wall. Seal all joints on the fuselage with gummed paper tape.
Make the main gear from two pieces of 1⁄8- inch diameter wire as shown. The pieces are attached to the ply mounting plates in the
