ne of the time-honored conven- tions of learning to fly R/C is that a beginner should start learning to
fly with a high-wing mono-
plane. After skill levels have progressed to a certain level of confidence, the modeler can then successfully switch to a low-wing model for sportier performance and a wider range of acrobatic maneuvers.
Flyzone tapped into that sequenced view of flight progression a number of years ago with their Switch, a combination model in- tended for the beginning flyer, which could be easily changed from a high-wing trainer to a low wing sport model by simply moving the wing. Their confidence in this revolution- ary concept led them to guarantee: “You will successfully learn to fly with the Switch or we will replace it with your choice of any Fly- zone trainer of up to equal value. All we ask
is that you train with the Switch in its high- wing configuration, under the supervision of a qualified, club designated instructor...” The popularity of the original Switch was instantaneous, as it proved to be an excel- lent high-wing trainer when used under ap- propriate supervision for the beginning fly- er. The low-wing sport configuration earned even more positive reviews and became a favorite configuration as experience was gained.
The initial success of the larger Switch gave rise to a slightly smaller version being reviewed here, the Mini Switch. There are several differences in the two planes: the larger Switch spanned 45 inches in the high wing version (42 inches in the low-wing); had a wing loading of 14 ounces per square foot; and was aimed squarely at the new/be- ginning flyer.
