on trading cards On the heels of its successful Lon-
don Games trading cards, Topps has pro- duced the 2014 U.S. Olympic & Paralym- pic Team Hopefuls set. In all, 100 Sochi Winter Games hopefuls are featured in the set, which includes 13 U.S. Figure Skating athletes. In a nod to Olympic greats, Topps has included 11 “Olympic legends,” which is dominated by fi gure skaters. Gold medalists Dick Button, Peggy Fleming, Scott Hamilton, Kristi Yama- guchi, Brian Boitano and silver medal- ist Nancy Kerrigan each have cards. Some lucky traders will fi nd
cards autographed by a legend or Olympic hopeful. There are also spe- cial “swatch cards” that feature patch- es worn by athletes at an event. The current Team USA fi gure skaters are Max Aaron,
Jeremy Abbott, John Coughlin, Meryl Davis, Caydee Denney, Christina Gao, Gracie Gold, Maia and Alex Shibutani, Ashley Wagner, Charlie White and Agnes Zawadzki. Evan Lysacek, who did not compete this season, is also featured. Card packs and full sets are available at major retailers and online at

Roster of teams announced for Sochi The 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, will
feature the fi rst Olympic Figure Skating Team Event, and the ISU has announced the 10 nations that will compete for medals. The ISU awarded points to member countries over
the past year at international competitions. The top 10 teams earned a spot in the short program/dance of the event. After the short program/dance, the top fi ve teams will continue on to the free skate/dance, with the top three earning medals. The 10 countries are Canada, China, France,
Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Russia, Ukraine and the United States. The Olympic Figure Skating Team Event kicks off before the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, Feb. 6, and ends on Sunday, Feb. 9.
Simpson and Blackmer end partnership U.S. junior pairs champions Britney Simpson and Matthew
Blackmer announced they have ended their partnership. Both Simpson and Blackmer have expressed interest in fi nding new partners.
Simpson and Blackmer, who trained in Colorado Springs
Colo., under coach Dalilah Sappenfi eld, began their partnership in February of 2011. In their time skating together, they earned three medals on the Junior Grand Prix (JGP) circuit including a bronze medal at the 2011 JGP Final, a U.S. junior silver medal in 2012, and they are the reigning U.S. junior champions. “After much thought and discussion, we have mutually
agreed to end our skating partnership,” Simpson and Blackmer said in a joint statement. “We are proud of our many accomplishments and only wish each other the best in future endeavors.”
