ASK MR. EDGE

New book focuses on boot and blades issues, injury prevention

Skaters today are prone to the same in- juries they experienced decades ago, despite the many changes to boot and blade design. How, some may ask, can this still be hap- pening? Since 2001, the Ask Mr. Edge column

has made you aware of and discussed how and why many diff erent types of injuries occur. Despite my best eff orts, there are still problems within the industry. I believe we have an industry that is undereducated when it comes to fi tting, mounting and sharpening blades. T is has led to injuries that could have been prevented. Many, I’m sure, will disagree with me about this but so be it.

Fifteen years ago I started working on a

project that I felt would help skaters achieve maximum performance while at the same time reducing their risk of injury. T e result of that project has been the

writing and release of my new book, titled Anatomy of a Figure Skating Injury. In it I discuss and point out the many diff erent injuries and problems skaters experience throughout their skating careers and how to systematically identify and solve them. I believe the education that is lacking in the industry is all contained in this book. T e book, available at Amazon.com, is written in such a way as to never become outdated. T is is not only a great resource book but a reference guide as well. In it one will fi nd most, if not all, the answers to his

or her skating-re- lated problems or injuries.

Mr. Edge

Mr. Edge is a qualifi ed skate technician with years of experience. He answers questions on boots, blades and foot problems related to your equipment. T e opinions of Mr. Edge are his own and do not necessarily refl ect the opinions of U.S. Figure Skating or SKATING magazine. Remember, if you have problems with your feet, check with a doctor — the problem may well be with your boot, but it could be more serious. Check with your local pro shop for more information about boots and blades.
