alize exactly what is being planned. “Also, when you walk around the armory, you feel a sense of his-


tory,” Hughes said. “It’s hard not to imagine what it was like when the army was training there in the 1800s. Tat’s why we’re leaving as much of the original structure and design as possible — it’s part of history (the building is a landmark).”


KNIC is committing $8 million to build a 50,000-square foot community center within the facility. Tere are also plans to create a foundation to establish free after-school ice sports and academic tutor- ing programs for disadvantaged youth. Dozens of neighborhood orga- nizations are in favor of the project. “We’re a highly motivated group and we go 24/7,” Hughes said.


“I look forward to continuing to update the skating community with all our exciting developments and progress in this process, and to see our vision of transforming the world of ice sports and the Kingsbridge community come to fruition. “We are hoping to break ground in 2014 and do construction in 2015 and 2016. More to come!”


The Kingsbridge Ice Center will feature a record nine rinks, more than any other facility in the world.
