The thought of heading into a stressful holiday scenario may quicken your heart rate (“Hey, who wants to tell Aunt Susan that her cockatiel terrorizes the kids?”), but there’s good reason to embrace your inner optimist. New research published in The American Journal of Cardiology suggests that people with glass- half-full outlooks are signifi - cantly less likely to suffer from a heart attack.
After considering risk factors like age, smoking, and diabetes, scientists from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine analyzed the dispositions of 1,483 healthy siblings of people who experienced heart disease before age 60 (statistically, a group twice as likely to develop it). After a 12-year follow-up, they found that those who reported better well-being and outlooks had one-third fewer cardiac events compared with the pessimists.
