TALT Completes Conservation Easement on Coastal Bend Rice Farm
T
EXAS AGRICULTURAL LAND TRUST (TALT) AND THE PAT Bulanek family announce the completion of a
conservation easement on the family’s farm in Bra- zoria County in Texas’ Coastal Bend region. Funded through the Texas Farm & Ranch Lands Conserva- tion Program (TFRLCP), the conservation easement ensures that Bulanek Farms will forever remain in agriculture. “The protection of this farm achieves a number
of public policy goals,” said TALT’s Chief Executive Offi cer Blair Fitzsimons. “It protects open space in a highly-fragmenting area near Houston, it conserves habitat for migratory birds in one of North America’s most signifi cant fl y-ways, and it provides a buffer against the hurricanes that often ravage the coast. Moreover, it ensures that the land stays available for agriculture.” Founded in 2007 by leaders from several statewide
agricultural and landowner organizations, the non- profi t Texas Agricultural Land Trust works to conserve Texas’ heritage of private lands stewardship, and the natural resources, open space and other benefi ts pro- vided by those private lands. A state program, the Texas Farm & Ranch Lands

Conservation Program was created by the Legislature in 2005 to offset the fragmentation and the loss of Texas’ productive agricultural lands. Housed at the General Land Offi ce and overseen by an advisory board drawn from the agricultural industry, TFRLCP provides grants to fund the purchase of conservation easements, which allow agricultural activities while restricting future commercial development. “One of the most signifi cant aspects of the Bu-
lanek easement is that the family used the proceeds to purchase nearby grazing lands,” said Fitzsimons. “With this easement, they are able to broaden their conservation impact, which benefi ts all Texans.” For more information, please visit
