Cemetery Hill | UConn The women’s team takes preseason runs in a graveyard with a huge hill in the middle of it. In reference to what is known as Cemetery Hill, coach Katie Woods said, “It’s a killer.”

Hoop Dreams | North Carolina Chapel Hill is a basketball town at heart, so

the men’s lacrosse team divides into smaller squads for an off-season hoops tournament. The winner gets to play against the coaching staff in the storied Smith Center.

“In the Air Tonight” | Syracuse After fall ball, the men’s team lifts every Friday at 7 a.m. At the end of the semester, the workouts culminate with a five-minute squat hold to Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.”

Turkey Trot Bowl | Penn State The Turkey Trot Bowl is a two-pronged event: a full-field football game Friday night before Thanksgiving, followed by a race around campus the next morning. The race is followed by a breakfast, where men’s coach Jeff Tambroni presents MVPs from the game and race awards in the form of marinated turkey legs.

Run to the Fist

Run to Monticello | Virginia It’s known as Mr. Jefferson’s university.

Naturally, Virginia’s men’s lacrosse team sprints up the mountain leading to Mr. Jefferson’s house, Monticello. Once the Cavaliers get to the top, they presumably curse Thomas Jefferson for building his home on a peak instead of in the valley.

Gator Mountains | Florida

The official name is Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, but everyone just calls it The Swamp. If you run the stairs of the edifice, which can seat over 90,000 fans, it’s called a Gator Mountain. The Florida women do 10-20 at a time carrying sledgehammers and chains.

The Incline | Air Force It’s not like the Falcons are afraid of heights. But using the steep 2,000-foot Manitou Incline at the base of Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs as a fall training run? That’s just cruel.

The Program The Incline A Publication of US Lacrosse

Former U.S. Marine and Navy lacrosse player Eric Kapitulik has put numerous teams through the paces of his military-style leadership and team-building regimen. Among them: Bucknell, Cornell, Harvard, Hofstra, Lehigh, Maryland, Michigan, Navy, Loyola, Penn, Towson and Tufts. Full-field log shuttles, wheelbarrows, dead drags and stadium fireman-carry workouts are among the physical components.
