Goal Circle Women’s rules changes debut
The NCAA women’s lacrosse rules committee has approved changes to the rules regarding the goal circle for the 2014 season.
Defenders will be permitted to move through any portion of the goal circle in pursuit of an opponent, and a single defender may remain in the goal circle if she is marking the ball carrier within a stick’s length. All defenders must still avoid committing shooting space fouls. The changes will revolutionize play around the goal circle. “We’re using the new rule as a green light to put a lot more pressure on attackers behind the cage,” Drexel coach Hannah Rudloff said. “We’re experimenting with a few different defensive looks that would’ve been a lot more risky in the past, but now we feel like we can cover ground faster.“ The committee also approved a few other significant rule changes. The maximum length of a goalie stick was increased from 48 to 52 inches, all game balls must be NOCSAE- certified, and, after a goal, a scorer must drop her stick to the ground or hand it over to the closest umpire without adjusting it in any way. The last rule is intended to prevent players from tugging on strings or switching sticks after scoring to elude illegal stick violations. — Clare Lochary
