a pushup, I would go ahead and do it. Taking a break from studying? Do 50. Before bed? 100 or 200. First thing in the morning, I’d do 100.” Dennis showed versatility

last season, when he took note of how many defenders on the team were injured. He went to coach Matt Holtz and offered to switch to short-stick defensive midfielder.

Dennis’ experience as a workout junkie prepared him well for one of the game’s most physically demanding positions. “Trying hard in the gym

made me a better player because I had that edge,” he said. “D-middie, you have to be really tough. You have to have all eyes open.” Dennis’ nickname, Deuce

Deuce, is a nod to his high school jersey number, 22.

It’s actually not a Gary Gait reference. Dennis received it as an honor from his coach Rich Gargulio at Baldwin (N.Y.) High. Baldwin retired the 22 jersey after the 2008 death of alum Will Barrow, who was one of the best short-stick midfielders in history at Virginia. The high school later reintroduced the jersey number as a tribute to the men’s lacrosse player who most exemplified Barrow’s on-

and off-field characteristics. Dennis’ determination and sportsmanship won him the chance to wear Barrow’s 22 at Baldwin. (He’s 23 on the Detroit roster.) “What I feel is if you train

and you practice hard, it will correlate to play in a game,” said Dennis, who played in 14 games for Detroit Mercy. “If you train to the best of your ability, you will play to the best of your ability.” LM
