How ‘Plant of the Month’ Came to Be
By Ellen H. Brisendine

A
YEAR AGO THIS MONTH, I STOOD IN THE BACK OF A PAVILION AT THE TEXAS SEC- tion, Society for Range Management, annual meeting brainstorming ideas for editorial content for The Cattleman, The Cattleman Plus
and
thecattlemanmagazine.com with range professionals Jeff Goodwin and Kent Ferguson. You have told us in word and deed that you like to learn about range
and pasture management. This topic tops the list on countless surveys. Seminars on plant identifi cation or forage management are well-attended. I asked Goodwin, state Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI)
specialist, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Services (NRCS), and Ferguson, state rangeland management specialist, NRCS, if they could provide The Cattleman readers with a “Plant of the Month” identifi cation guide. We would devote 1 page in each 2013 issue to big pictures and short descriptions. Goodwin and Ferguson were happy to accept the challenge and have
given us good information and good plant photos from their fi les, and from the fi les of colleagues, each month this year. I’ll see them in a few days at the 2013 Texas Section meeting. I wonder if I can talk them into another 12 months? Let me know if you want to see more in 2014. The October issue of The Cattleman contains our Bull Buyer’s Guide.
In this special advertising section, some of the leading producers of beef seedstock and herd bulls offer you a look at their programs. We expanded the Bull Buyer’s Guide to our other communications
platforms. Find special video from some of these advertisers on The Cattle- man Plus, our tablet app. Visit
thecattlemanmagazine.com and click on the Bull Buyer’s Guide hot button to access the Guide and handy links to advertiser websites. And while you’re at lunch this month, open The Cattleman NOW app on your smartphone and scroll through the Featured Products to access more advertiser information. Thanks to our advertisers for supporting the Bull Buyer’s Guide, in all
its forms, and thanks to Jeff and Kent for supporting The Cattleman read- ers with good information. This publication is certainly a team effort.
