TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION

First students graduate

have graduated successfully from the University of Nottingham’s Ningbo campus in China. The course is part of a multi-million dollar programme that Sondrel, one of the world’s leading system-to-silicon IC design consultancies, instigated and set up in partnership with Mentor Graphics and the University at the beginning of the year and is believed to be a world first in the semiconductor industry. The students have all successfully completed three months of intensive training in the latest IC design methodologies and practices and will be able to utilise their expert knowledge working with many companies in China. Sondrel set up the course in conjunction with Nottingham University and Mentor Graphics to help address the severe shortage of qualified IC designers in the region. The successful graduates from the course have also been offered a four-month internship at one of Sondrel’s offices in China.

dvanced Power Electronics Corp. (USA), a leading Taiwanese manufacturer of MOS power semiconductors for DC-DC power conversion applications, has launched a new step-up converter capable of efficiently driving up to eight white LEDs in series for backlighting applications. The APE1612-3 uses current mode,

architecture to regulate the LED current, which is set using an external current sense resistor. The APE1612-3 features a low 300mV feedback voltage that reduces power loss and improves efficiency. The OV pin monitors the output voltage and turns off the converter if an over-voltage condition is present due to an open circuit condition. The APE1612-3 includes under-voltage lockout, current limiting and thermal shutdown protection preventing damage from an output overload.

New low-profile 0603 MLO™ diplexer A

VX Corporation, a leading manufacturer of advanced passive components and interconnect solutions, announced its new low-profile 0603 diplexer today. Based on the company’s patented multilayer organic high density interconnect technology, the new 0603 MLO™ diplexer employs high dielectric constant and low loss materials to realize high Q passive printed elements, such as inductors and capacitors in a multilayer stack up. Capable of supporting multiple wireless standards, including: WCDMA, CDMA, WLAN, GSM, and BT, the 0603 diplexers are ideally suited for band switching in dual- and multiband applications, such as WiFi, WiMax, GPS, and cellular bands. Utilizing land grid array packaging technology, AVX’s new 0603 diplexers have an inherently low profile (<0.5mm) and exhibit excellent

solderability, low parasitics, and high heat dissipation. Expansion matched to PCBs, the diplexers also provide improved reliability with regards to comparable ceramic or silicon components.

arwin, the leading hi-rel connector and SMT board hardware manufacturer, has broadened the range of its Datamate Mix-Tek mixed-technology connector series that is available as standard off-the-shelf products. Now horizontal and coax versions of the popular 2mm pitch hi-rel family are immediately available for designers, reducing design time.

Harwin’s Datamate Mix-Tek

connector range can be customer-specified in a huge number of configurations of signal, power and coax contacts. But in order to respond to industry demands for fast turn-around, the company has made the most commonly-chosen variations available as standard items.

The new horizontal format and coax contact variants add to 41 other configurations that are also stocked as standard items, these include power only configurations from 2-10 power contacts and mixed contact configurations from 2 signal/2 power through to 12 signal/4 power.
